The latest buzz over a new product in the ED arena is coming, but the real excitement isn't just in its efficacy.
What may be the biggest breakthrough for Viagra (the little blue pill that was once impotent), but the real world hasn’t been able to place it in the limelight for it’s brand-name owner, CVS Health, has entered into a deal with Hims that could work, giving him a commission on up to a percentage of the sales.
The deal, which is subject to regulatory approval, is set to beram this summer, potentially including a branded version of the drug that is available in generic form. CVS is in the early stages of including the drug in prescription and over-the-counter versions of mood drugs.
“Viagra is a miracle drug for men, but it’s not for everybody,” says Dr. Varnhav Shetty, a urologist and the co-author of the article.
“It works because it’s a drug that's very effective,” he adds, “and it's also widely used for prostate problems.”
Pills that have been sitting at the bottom of the popular pharmacy’s pharmacy charts have been coming under fire for selling sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra. And as the article reports, some online retailers are now selling generic Viagra as well.
The problem is that Hims, part of a large now-defunct chain of pharmacies, is running two separate trials aimed at testing whether the drug can treat erectile dysfunction. Both treatments are available without a prescription.

“The site was in bad shape,” he says, “because they were selling a fake version of Viagra. It’s a very risky business and we hope that’s resolved.”
Since the deal was signed, the FDA has issued worldwide warnings about the sale of such drugs as Cialis, Levitra, and Staxyn. Hims is also warning consumers not to take the pills, because they can increase the risk of cardiovascular problems and dementia.
“The risk of serious side effects is extremely low,” says Shetty. “Just make sure you’re buying from a trustworthy and authorized pharmacy before taking any potentially dangerous medication.”
